The ancient Indian philosophy of yoga is well expressed in the second sutra of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: “योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः”, that is translated to “Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.” It is this rich definition of yoga, found in the first chapter, Samadhi Pada, and acts as a foundation for understanding the essence of yoga practice beyond its physical postures.


Three major elements make up the sutra:

  1. Yoga (योग): Usually it is considered in terms of asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath control), but in the real sense, yoga is union-the coordination of the body, mind, and spirit.
  2. Citta (चित्त): It means the mind-a combination of intellect, ego, and memory.
  3. Vritti (वृत्ति): It indicates fluctuations or changes in the mind.
  4. Nirodha (निरोध): It is cessation, restraint, or control.

Together, the sutra emphasises achieving a state in which the constant chatter of the mind subsides and one can experience inner stillness and clarity. This is the essence of Samadhi Pada, the first chapter of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, which focuses on the theory and practice leading to a meditative state.

Meditation is one of the primary practices of achieving citta vritti nirodha. Such practices include focus on the breath, chanting mantras, or even visualizing peaceful imagery in the mind.


It is not easy to get a calm mind. Modern distractions, stress, and our conditioned tendencies often pull us away from stillness. Here are some common challenges and ways to overcome them:

Restlessness: Start with short meditation sessions and gradually increase the duration.

Overthinking: Use pranayama (breathing exercises) to ground yourself before meditation.

Inconsistency: Create a routine that incorporates yoga and mindfulness into your daily life.
